Film Still 5: The Hall

I photographed this series in a frame by frame way that, had we filled in the blanks, might turn out looking much like a scene from a horror film or gothic, pulp novel. I directed her as she went as if she were acting out a scene. I call it my film still series, and similar things have been done before I know but it was amazing fun! Photography vs film is an interesting debate as it is, and in reality the first films were called animation because audiences in downtown France watching the Lumiere Brother's first reels saw animated "pictures", a series of slightly varying photographs viewed in rapid succession that created false motion. Here we have frames that in one way I wish were on a reel of Eastman Kodak motion picture film, but in another way apporach drama and cinema in a far more primitive way...in the way Muybridge photographed the running horses frame by frame in the mid-1800's, giving filmmakers the idea for the first time that false motion may be created with images. ANyway, blah blah blah--I like these and hope you like 'em too!!
